At RMC, biology majors begin designing and running their own experiments in their first semester. You’ll work with modern research tools—including CRISPR gene editing—and explore life from cells to ecosystems in science facilities ranked No. 13 in the nation by The Princeton Review (2025), preparing for medicine, research, health sciences, climate science, and more.

At RMC, your first semester is spent in a small, studio-format classroom developing the values, habits, and practices of a scientist. You’ll pick a topic, then design and run your own experiment to investigate it. From there, field-based courses take you into the woods, lakes, and streams to collect real biological data.
Recent biology research projects, guided by faculty mentors, have been funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Geographic Society. Whether your path after RMC leads to medical school, research, climate science, health sciences or another field, you’ll graduate with experience designing experiments, performing data analysis, and with contributions to real science.

Biology at RMC gives you access to eight teaching labs and 12 research labs equipped for work spanning molecular and cellular biology, physiology, and ecology. You can use tools such as electron and confocal microscopes, quantitative PCR instruments, tissue-culture facilities, and a 66-acre forested field station to investigate living systems from cells to ecosystems.
You’ll also join a close community in groups like the Pre-Health Society and Beta Beta Beta biological honor society, and compete for named scholarships like the Foster/Gowan Scholarship in Biology, alongside alumni now working as physicians, physician assistants, and process development engineers at companies like BioNTech.
